GEA Bloksma supplies sea water heater for anti-piracy system

On  September 18,  2009, in the presence of international media, the Australian company Secure-Marine, demonstrated their so called Hot Water Ship Protection System.

Secure-Marine is specialized in safety of vessels, harbors, industry and the prevention of terrorism. The Hot Water Ship Protection System can protect vessels against piracy attacks on open sea. Secure Marine chose the heavy lift ship “Fairplayer” from Jumbo Shipping as a test and demonstration vessel for their Hot Water Ship Protection System. During this press presentation, the Fairplayer was moored along the quay at Huisman Equipment in Schiedam, The Netherlands.

In one year there were 251 piracy incidents, whereof 92 attacks happened in front of the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden. Due to the fact that pirates make use of high tech weapons and tools, hostages and hijackings by pirates become more and more professional nowadays.

Protection of vessels against piracy is a very costly thing and just avoiding the dangerous areas and sailing around the cape, isn’t a cost effective solution either. However, without the use of weapons the passage of the area is very dangerous.

The human, environmental friendly and simple system of Secure Marine changes all this, says Raphael Kahn of Secure Marine, during the demonstration of the hot water ship protection system. All around the sea fence of the Fairplayer, a special pipe with nozzles was installed. The nozzles create a vertical water curtain of 80°C which sprays along the hull of the ship and can be seen as a very hot shower, which prevents pirates of entering the ship.

The system is easy to install and outboard sea water is being used. Depending on the length of the vessel, the system requires a high pressure pump of approximately 4000 l/min and a special sea water heater. For the test on the Fairplayer, GEA Bloksma provided a sea water heater.  At this moment, a standardized series of heaters is being developed in close cooperation with GEA Bloksma, to be able to equip all kind of vessel types and vessel sizes with this new system.

The company D. van de Wetering from Rotterdam is contracted by Secure-Marine for the installation and commissioning of the whole system on board of the vessels. Various ship owners have shown their interest in the new anti-pirate system already.
